Every day Herbs & Spices that are effective for better health!


Did you know that incorporating certain types of herbs & spices in your cooking can contribute to better digestion, decreased water retention, weight loss & overall better general health?

If they suit your palate, the following herbs & spices are a great way to improve your wellbeing:

GINGER
Commonly used for relieving morning sickness & an upset stomach, this gorgeous spice is now said to aid weight loss.
Ginger contains "Capsaicin" (the compound which creates the heat sensation when you eat it) which temporarily speeds up the metabolism resulting in increased calorie burn.
Add this spice to tea, salad dressings & sauces.

GARLIC
They say it keeps the vampires away, but did you know that garlic is a fantastic anti-inflammatory & natural antibiotic? It is excellent for boosting immune function & overall wellbeing. 

Interesting fact: studies show that rubbing some crushed garlic against cold sores helps alleviate pain & swelling!
If you are suffering with Athletes Foot, soak your feet in a small bath of warm water & crushed garlic. Its anti-fungal properties are said to relieve itching!

TURMERIC
This powerhouse spice has so many health benefits you need it in your diet!
Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory & antioxidant properties.
It is great for arthritis, can be effective for alleviating symptoms of depression as it can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. May help reverse steps in the heart disease process.
You can use Turmeric in stews, marinades or sprinkle on rice.

CHILLI (or Chilli Powder)
Most people either love it or hate it, but just like ginger - Chilli contains Capsaicin, which gives this spice its fiery flavour and is known to speed up the metabolism.
The hot and sweaty sensation you get when you consume large amounts of chilli, causes a thermic effect which encourages the body to burn more fat.
Use fresh chilli to make marinades, sauces or pastes. The powdered chilli can be used for flavouring rice, stews & lean burgers.

PARSLEY
The most favoured herb used to garnish a meal; recent research shows that this versatile herb contains antioxidants that may improve liver metabolism, which in turn can help weight loss by increasing the transportation of nutrients through the body for digestion instead of storing them. 
It is also a natural diuretic too!
Parsley Tea is a great way to relieve water retention!
Just add 2 teaspoons of dried parsley to a cup of boiled water, steep for 10 mins before drinking. Eat it fresh, parsley can also be added to your salad as the lettuce component.

ROSEMARY
Not only does it taste delicious with roast lamb & potatoes but it contains important compounds that help to block certain enzymes that link to type 2 diabetes. It is also a fantastic natural way to treat bloating!
Simply infuse 3 grams of dried rosemary with 1 cup of boiling water, leave for 10 mins, then strain, drink and enjoy.


As you can see, food can be used as medicine.
Where possible and palatable, try to incorporate a few of these herbs & spices in the kitchen for an extra health boost!
