Are you too embarrassed to exercise?

Walking into a gym for the first time can be a tough experience. You might feel embarrassed. You might feel you're too out of shape, or that you're wearing the wrong clothes or it may be the first time stepping into a gym and you feel out of place. But it's crucial to get through this and take that first step through the doors.

With the statistic of overweight and obese Australians at 63%, you may feel like the odds are against you. And, anyone who tries to start an exercise program knows that is can be extremely difficult to stick to for a long period of time. You may feel selfish for taking time away from your family for yourself or you're too busy to exercise. Some people find exercise boring and have lost that magical thing called motivation. But, there is an overlooked reason many people are avoiding exercising, and that's embarrassment.

Anyone can feel nervous about exercising if they haven't done it in a while. Anyone can feel embarrassed about exercising. Some of the most common excuses are:

  • I need to get into better shape before I can join a gym.
  • I don't know what kind of clothes to wear.
  • I don't like the way I look. I'm too fat to exercise.
  • I'm so awkward. I don't know how to use a machine.
  • What if I break a machine?
  • What if it's crowded and I have to stand around waiting to use the equipment? I'll feel so uncomfortable.
  • I don't want to have to talk to anybody.

 

Some people believe they can lose weight without exercising. It's true, they can.

However, it's not a healthy way to live the rest of your life. Some exercise is crucial for good overall health (not just weight loss). It has been proven that regular exercise improves how people feel about their bodies - even if they didn't lose weight.

The number one thing that gets your weight loss journey started is facing the fear. Everyone has had their first day, beginning a weight loss journey. Give yourself credit; give yourself a well deserved pat on the back for taking the step.
