Macros Vs. Calorie Counting*

Monday, 12 December 2016, By Josh Franken

So why are macros such a big thing? Why does vision choose to work off a macros specific diet compared to a calorie counting diet?

In every type of food, there are varying quantities of macronutrients, which are carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The theory behind "doing your food diary" is to hit specific amounts of these macronutrients each day and it'll boost your metabolism to its maximum fat burning zone.

Now how is this different to calorie counting many may ask?

Well... tracking macronutrients specifies your food intake between three variables that play an important role in how fat is used up in your body. On the other hand, calorie counting implies you to track any type of food regardless of its nutrient composition. If you chose to do a calorie counting diet, you could fill up your day with any foods if it was within your total calorie intake for the day. Although that may sound logical, one may end up only eating carbohydrate and fat dense foods, and that would not be an effective diet plan as protein is essential for tissue repair and to provide satiety. In addition, our bodies have a 'carbohydrate tank', which means we can only store a certain amount of carbs each day. If we aren't tracking the amount of carbohydrates we consume, and hence overconsume carbohydrates (depending on the individual), the 'carb tank' will spill over and those excess carbs will be stored in our bodies as fat. Therefore, Vision Personal Training chooses to stick to a fool proof diet that is scientifically proven to get you results. Happy weight loss!
