How to set goals for a great 2017!*

I'm so lucky as this time of year to get to spend time with my clients on a more personal level reflecting on all of their success from the year just gone. 

I also get to spend time hearing about all of their missteps from the past 12 months and the ambitions & dreams they didn't quite achieve.

Failures aren't really failures unless their fatal. What most people call failures are simply lessons. Lessons and experience are your most valuable assets!

So how can you use all the achievements and lessons from 2016, drive you to a successful and happy 2017? 

I've been goal setting personally for my whole life. My first goals list was probably a list of Christmas Presents I wanted when I was 5! The funny thing is that the actions needed to achieve that goal aren't really any different from the way I set goals now. 

 

So where to start....

#1 - Figure out what your PRIORITIES are...

Take some time to sit down and without thinking too much write down a list of priorities in your life. What areas of your life are important to you right now? Health? Finance/Wealth? Career or Business? Family? Lifestyle? Cars? Houses? Kids? 

It's important to be really honest with yourself and set what you really want, not what you think others will be impressed by or expect of you. If all you want is to be able to run 5km or spend more time with your loved ones that's awesome and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If your career really is a priority at the moment and you just want to slowly get fit and strong again, that's just as great. 

 

#2 - Write it down

Write out what you would love to achieve in each of these areas in the next 12, 24 or 36 months. The timeframe is really up to you. I believe you need to have a picture of where you want to go long term, but if you're really motivated by short 3-6 month goals, stick with that! 

 

#3 - Don't forget your goals! 

It may sound stupid, but have your ever set a group of goals at once only to look back 3 months later and realise you completely forgot one? I know I have. 

Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind as much as possible. Stick them on your mirror or next to your computer at work or make them the screen saver on your phone! Whatever you need to do to remind yourself multiple times a day what your end goal is. Why are you still up preparing food at 10pm? Why are you training at the gym at 5am? Because the discomfort of now is worth it if you know where you are going. 

 

#4 - Book a time

Book in a time each week; I use Sundays, to sit down and plan out what you need to get done in the next 7 days to stay on track to achieving your goals. This could be done at home with your partner or with your trainer.

 

#5 How to test the quality of your goals?? 

I do this all the time with my team and it's really quite simple. Sit down and read out all your goals and ask yourself, if you were to achieve all of these in 2017, how would you feel? Would it be the best year of your life? If you answer yes, then you're good to go. 

 

Take Aways - 

  • Learn to look at your failures in a different light. Look at them as a positive, a lesson you only need to go through once
  • Be honest with yourself and set goals based on what is really important to you! Who cares what anyone else thinks of your goals!
  • Take a photo of your goals and set them as the background wallpaper on your phone. Let's be honest, you probably look at it more than you do anything else in a day.
  • Test your goals, make sure they excite and scare you just a bit!!  If they don't, dream bigger!!
