HOW MENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS YOUR RESULTS*

Tuesday, 24 July 2018, By Amber Chadwick

The World Health Organisation defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and we all know that physical activity and a healthy lifestyle can improve mental health, but not often is it said that mental health can improve the results of our physical activity and healthy lifestyle.

So how does mental health impact your results? Well, poor mental health can affect your ability to make healthy decisions and fight off chronic diseases. So, in-fact, neglecting your mental health can lead to more serious health complications such as:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Weakened immune system
- Asthma
- Obesity
- Gastronomical problems
- Premature death
- Depression alone can cause chronic fatigue, insomnia and increased sensitivity to aches and pains due to abnormal function of neurotransmitters in the brain.

The perceived disconnect between "mind" and "body" creates the misconception that mental illness is not a physical disease. In reality, mental health has a direct impact on your physical health.

Ways to help create a healthy body and mind:

-Exercise can not only release happy hormones/endorphins but is a great stress reliever and will often lead to a sense of belonging through community or even develop passion for a new hobby.

- Meditation and/or affirmations can reinforce a positive and happy mind not only this but other therapeutic activities such as journaling, reading or expressive art can relax you. It is really important to schedule time for yourself and to do things that you really love doing.

- Surrounding yourself with a positive circle will create a more positive environment. Nurturing your mind is as important as nurturing your body, and it will make you better able to handle whatever life throws at you.

- Get away from technology as it can be a larger source of negativity than you realise. Distance from technology especially during your YOU time can help you feeling more well rested and connected to the life that is happening right in front of you.

- Studies show that people who get a good night's sleep have more energy and tend to be more productive. This is why maintaining a normal and consistent sleep schedule is so important.
