Nitric oxide is a gas that is secreted into the blood by cells inside the body and it is often called the miracle molecule; here's why.

  1. Nitric Oxide Reduces Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is associated with an increased risk of blood vessel narrowing, rupture, leaking, and clot formation, all of which can lead to stroke; and one of the main functions of this molecule is the widening of blood vessels, which decreases blood pressure.

  1. Nitric Oxide Improves Circulation

An efficient circulatory system is important for adequate delivery of blood to the extremities such as the brain and lungs. Improving blood flow also removes pressure from the heart as it does not have to work as hard to transport oxygen around the body.

How Can My Lifestyle Choices Impact This?

Nitric oxide is manufactured naturally by the body; however, poor lifestyle choices can lead to an inefficient system. High body fat percentage and low activity levels are associated with high blood pressure and plaque build-up in the vessels of the heart, both of which are responsible damaging cells that produce nitric oxide.

How Can You Enhance Nitric Oxide?

  1. Nutrition:
Nitric oxide can be increased by consuming dark, leafy green vegetables such as celery, rocket and beetroot, while beetroot juice has proven the most effective and many endurance athletes are now turning to beetroot juice as a way to naturally enhance performance.
  2. Exercise:
Frequent cardiovascular exercise (3+ days per week) has been shown to improve the production of nitric oxide. Large, multi-joint movements such as squats and dead lifts have also proven effective as they provide positive nitric oxide adaptations over the entire system.

By implementing a lifestyle of frequent exercise, healthy eating and consuming dark, leafy green vegetables, you can help protect your cells, and keep utilising the benefits of nitric oxide, the miracle molecule.
