At Vision Personal Training Engadine most of the clients that we deal with day to day are over 40.

One of the most common perceptions we see in our community is that as you get older you can't lose weight. You just have to be happy with god gave you and deal with it!

There are some hard health truths to face as we get older.

  • Our body's don't move as well
  • A lot more can hurt us if we aren't careful
  • Medical conditions become a real worry (High blood pressure, Cholesterol, Fatty Liver, Osteoporosis…) Things that were not a worry, become a priority.
  • We learn that 'if it's to be it's up to me'
  • It's not easy anymore, in fact some days it's bloody hard!

All this said, you're not dead yet! You definitely can be in a better situation to what you are right now. Not only can you lose weight, you can lose all of it and keep it off!

There are three key areas in which you need to apply your focus.

  1. Moving your body more, exercising!
  2. Putting less crap in your mouth, eating better!
  3. Taking responsibility for you and your family, ownership!

Exercise

So you're a little older! That doesn't mean you can't do anything. You see your age has allowed you to see the benefit that compound interest can provide to a person's life!

This is the same principle with your exercise. Consistency is the key for your result. Weights training 2-3 times per week for a period of 30-40 mins is step one. Your body is probably saw, injured or in some kind of negative condition. Weights training is non-impact, prevents injury and builds muscle for long term strength and results. It's also the easiest kind of exercise to do!

Partner this with some brisk walking when you can fit it in. It will ensure that your body is a fat burning machine. KISS yourself…. Keep it simple stupid.

Eat Better

By your age you definitely know better. You know what the good food groups are and you know what the bad food groups are. You definitely don't need lectures on how to eat! This is why I am not going to tell you about all of the latest trends in nutrition today. It can get really confusing.

Instead I am going to encourage you to eat the foods you know are good for you and don't eat too much of anything, always in moderation.

Some tips that you may not know about.

Eat Carbs! They are good for you. Focus on fruit, veggies and things that come from the ground. However don't each too much of them and try to eliminate them after 3pm for best results.

Eat Protein! Eat as much lean protein as you can fit in. Most people can't hit their protein requirement even when they try their hardest. A bit of protein in every meal is a massive benefit to energy, recover and muscle growth.

Don't drink too much alcohol. The more of this you drink, the less likely you will building everlasting health habits.

Taking Responsibility For You And Your Family

This is the biggest step. You have been through a lot of experiences in your life. People have let you down more and more as you have gotten older, then on rare occasion others have surprised you in a good way.

In either case you are who you are today because of the decisions YOU have made over time. If you are overweight then it is your fault. If your partner is overweight then it is YOUR fault. If your kids are overweight then it is YOUR fault.

Something beautiful happens when you admit fault to yourself. The initial hurt and acceptance period is where you are angry at yourself for allowing you to get to this point.

After the pain, you then have an epiphany! If you are who you are today because of the decisions you have made in the past…. Then what does that say about who you will be in 10 years' time? Visualise yourself in 10 year's time If you don't change..

A scary thought. Which hopefully links to a huge fear of disappointment. You see that is the normal and important thought process that needs to happen before change. You need to fear what you could become, as humans our most powerful motivator is not running towards pleasure. It is ensuring we are moving away from pain.

Use your pain as your motivator. Be comfortable with it and then once you build the good version of yourself. You will never need to feel pain again.

It's on you, it always has been!
