No school like the old school

As we are all probably aware, the Health and Fitness Industry has been around for a very long time.  We could go all the way back to the ancient Greek times (2500-200bc) where medical practitioners such as Herodicus and Hippocrates believed that development of the body was just as important as development of the mind, and as studies have shown us these days, completing regular exercise is also a great stimulant for the brain, leading to better memory function and focus.

With so many fads and trends coming and going it's sometimes hard to keep up, even for professionals, but as the word states they are normally fads and do not hang around for too long. This is why it's always preferable when exercising or looking into starting your journey to always go with a coach that does not promote crazy exercises or spun out nutrition plans, after all, we are all looking for convenience these days and as people's lives get busier we all end up short on time.  My point is who's got time to get injured with a headstand kettlebell swing with a back flip burpee, you may think that's ridiculous but just check YouTube and you will get the idea.

I am a firm believer in mastery, for instance the push up is a highly effective move when performed correctly but people see through and move on too quickly before it's time, leaving gaps in their potential.  They say practice makes perfect but that's wrong, PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, if you practice doing something wrong perfectly then you will be perfectly good at doing it wrong.

We can all agree that moves like the Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Overhead Press and chin ups etc.… (Compound movements) have made their mark as effective muscle stimulus moves through the years and continue to this day to help people to achieve strength gains, fat loss, the ability to rehab from injuries and so on.

Ask yourself the question when you think that you have plateaued with training "have I really mastered all aspects of the bench press, could I use different forms of tempo, reps or angles?".  I guarantee that if you are open to these things that your mind set of "I am bored of my gym/studio I need a change" will disappear and your training/health and fitness can excel to another level and it will be like you have just started training again.

Don't get me wrong, I say I understand that there are other exercises and pieces of equipment out there that are really fun to use and all serve a purpose in the fantastic world that is health and fitness, and I must add respect where respect is due. I myself have attained many different qualifications which allow me to use such tools as, Kettlebells, Prowlers, battling ropes, maces, landmines, aqua balls and sandbags to name just a few, but we get overhauled with posts and fancy flyers advertising all these cool tools and cheap deals to get involved, you get a 5 minute lesson on all 20 exercise pieces and then are put into a crazy workout, form gets lost and basic biomechanical movements are just shoved aside. With the result being you end up in a heap, get a high five and believe that you have had an awesome workout. Next time this happens ask yourself has that session really made me better, am I a better version of myself, the answer is... probably not! How long can you really sustain that kind of intensity of training.
