Covid-19: How has it affected your Health and Fitness plans for 2020?*

Tuesday, 21 July 2020, By Kyle Johnston

Covid-19 has affected all of us in different ways. What's interesting though, is the response is different from person to person and for most of us, these responses have occurred as a result of our own individual habits that have formed over the years. Put simply a habit is a routine of behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously, so most of the time we may not realise that we are doing it or more importantly, why we're doing it. Very rarely are we aware of what the trigger is that has caused this behaviour to occur.

Procrastination, unmotivated, feeling depressed, anxious, sad, angry, frustrated... I'm sure you get the idea. These are just some examples of triggers that can cause us to fall back into old habits which can cause responses such as over-eating or not eating enough, not exercising, drinking alcohol regularly, not following through on a goal that was set because "something came up" ... I could go on, but these are just examples.

Don't get me wrong, these are testing times for all of us! However, think of it this way. That car sitting out in your driveway... imagine that was the only car you will ever have. It had to last you for the rest of your life. Have a think about how you would treat it/look after it differently? It's the same thing with our bodies!

So, have a think again, how has covid-19 affected your health and fitness plans for 2020?

What triggers have occurred on a daily bases causing you to gradually fall back into old habits?

And most importantly, how do we create a new habit once you're aware of those that aren't helping you?

4 easy ways to change a habit!

  1. Make it obvious. e.g. Don't hide your fruits in your fridge, put them on display front and centre.
  2. Make it attractive. e.g. Start with the fruit you like the most, so you'll actually want to eat one when you see it.
  3. Make it easy. e.g. Don't create needless friction by focusing on fruits that are hard to peel. Bananas and apples are super easy to eat, for example.
  4. Make it satisfying. e.g. If you like the fruit you picked, you'll love eating it and feel healthier as a result!

For the short term at least, the current situation with Covid-19 Isolation Restrictions in the new norm. There's no better time than now to start making changes. Whether you do or you don't, the time is going to pass anyway. The choice is yours!
