Have you ever heard the term 'failing to plan is planning to fail'? Well it couldn't be more the truth. If you aren't planning your meals in advance then you are making it a hell of a lot harder for yourself to actually stick to your diet and it eventually could turn into consistent step backs bringing you further away from your goals.

So what is actually meal prep?

Meal prep involves taking the time to prepare your meals for the week ahead. It can be done in a variety of ways as some may prepare every single meal for the week where as others may find more value in preparing certain parts of the meal that could be considered tedious.

When choosing your own meal prep method, it's important to make sure it is one that is suitable to your individual schedule, lifestyle and needs. It needs to be something that is able to be sustained in the long run.

Why is everyone doing it?

Meal prep helps to control portion sizes, is convenient for people who are time poor, helps with saving money and is convenient. By having readymade meals that are easily available in your fridge, freezer or cupboard there is a less likely chance for snacking and over eating.

How do I get started?

  1. Keep it simple. You don't need to over complicate the meals or go crazy and prep every single detail. If you are just starting off then start by prepping one meal for the week. This won't overwhelm you and it will help you get comfortable and into a routine slowly.
  2. Make a plan. Take some time before you hit the grocery store to plan your meals for the week, then make sure you have an orderly list with exactly everything you need.
  3. Simple doesn't mean boring. If you are struggling for ideas, take a look at Instagram, blogs or Pinterest. People love sharing their food ideas.
  4. Cook in bulk. Meal prep is designed to make life easier for you. Don't be afraid to cook more than you need, freeze the meals that you aren't going to eat straight away and save them for the week after.
  5. Pick a time and day that works best for you. If meal prepping is something that you have decided will help you reach your goals then you need to be disciplined and choose a day where you are free and have an hour or two to spare.

Eating healthy doesn't have to be hard work. All it takes is planning, commitment and discipline.
