Do you exercise regularly, but can't understand why you don't look like that person next to you at the gym? Maybe you know someone who looks like an Instagram model without even lifting a finger? What about that colleague who seems able to eat just about anything and never looks like they gain a gram?

We usually attribute these differences to the ambiguities of different body shapes. However, if we go beyond the basic classifications and investigate how these bodies really differ, we can actually enhance our body composition. Below we look at the different somatotypes (body types) and see that when armed with this information you'll better understand your genetic predisposition and therefore make the right decisions to reach your health and fitness goals.

Somatotypes are a set of generalized body types broken down into three categories: ectomorphs, endomorphs, and mesomorphs. These categories are based on how embryos develop in layers, namely the inner layer (endoderm); the middle layer (mesoderm); and the outer layer (ectoderm). Generally speaking, Ectomorphs are thin and slender and may appear fragile, Endomorphs are curved and solid and often appear overweight, and Mesomorphs tend to have developed muscles and appear strong and powerful.  You are a combination of all layers, but will be dominate in one or two layers determined by genetics and conditions in the womb.

Once you have an understanding of your unique body type you can better understand how to train and eat to get you the results you want. This can range from how much protein to consume daily, the breakdown of hard and low/moderate cardio and the most advantageous resistance programming.  If it is important to realise your somatotype is not necessarily limiting, indeed by understanding it you can both formulate both training and nutrition to rise above your body type and improve your capacity. Appreciating your uniqueness should also allow you to celebrate you and your achievements.

To find out more about your somatotype head into Vision Personal Neutral Bay where we can help you determine your body type and give you a training and nutrition plan that we get you the results you desire.
