What got you started?
As I approached the age of 40 I noticed that I had started to slowly put on weight and I reached a point where I looked at myself and really was not happy with what I saw. The weight gain was not huge in terms of kilo's but it was huge in terms of the way it affected the perception of myself and my self-esteem. After 12 months of trying on my own, I didn't manage to lose a single kilo. In fact I probably put on a few more!
I never ate or exercised to lose weight previously and it became obvious that I didn't have the tools or the knowledge to do this.
What message would you give to women with a similar body shape to you?
Joining a personal training studio is not just for people who want to lose a lot of weight. Everyone has different goals. Even losing a few kilos can make a huge difference to the way you feel about yourself - as it did for me.
Why do you keep training now?
Probably the most unexpected benefit is the improvement in my fitness. I now really enjoy running regularly, have completed a half marathon - something I would never have thought possible. I'm fitter now than I was when I was in my 20's and 30's. My goals have now shifted from weight loss to continually improving my fitness.
What has been your experience?
I love it at the studio! Even though you work really hard during your session, it's a fun and friendly environment with great trainers and clients. They have also helped me understand that this is a journey - you won't always have the wins and you will have setbacks but if you stick with it you'll be able to achieve what you want and maintain it.
