Gut Health. Why is it important?*

What happens when you do all your exercise, eat perfectly but the scales just won't budge?  The answer may be a little closer to home that you think and actually may be inside us all.  Gut Health is an often overlooked, yet vital aspect to overall health and wellbeing.


Gut Health can have a direct impact on the following:

  • The microbiome
  • stress and anger management
  • mental and emotional health
  • nutrient absorption
  • sleep
  • exercise quality
  • weight 
  • hormones


So, what is Gut health?

Bacteria, fungus and viruses all live in the stomach and form the microbiome.  Most of these microbes live in the large intestine; called the cecum.  There are more than 40 trillion active bacteria in the gut and up to 1000 different species.  Collectively this adds up to be the weight of your brain and therefore acts almost as another organ in your body.  By keeping these bacteria healthy and fed with a variety of quality nutrition your health can really be improved dramatically.


Seven signs of poor gut health

  1. upset stomach: gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea
  2. a high sugar diet
  3. unintentional weight change
  4. sleep disturbance and poor sleep patterns
  5. skin irritation
  6. autoimmune conditions
  7. food intolerances.

So now we know what can happen if we have poor gut health, but how do we fix it?



  1. fibrous fruits and veges
  2. fermented foods such as kimchi and pickles
  3. fruit
  4. garlic

So, if you have been trying hard without success, maybe it's time to look inwards at your own gut health.  Consult your Personal Trainer for more tailored changes to your food habits and remember; consistency is the key!
