Our lovely Lauren reflects on her experience at Vision Personal Training Surry Hills so far - and shares the way in which her goals have changed along the way. Read on...

Some time ago, I watched a friend of mine change her health philosophy through working as a Personal Trainer for Vision. She was also working as a Chef and was constantly talking about what she was learning about food and fitness in her training as a Personal Trainer. When I was initially thinking that I needed to bring back some healthy habits, I didn't want to just join a gym because I knew I needed some guidance in overall health. Her influence and some research lead me to Vision Surry Hills.

The main reason I wanted to get fit and healthy was because I set out to complete a half marathon in 2015.  I joined Vision Surry Hills in March and signed up for the  Half Marathon in Sydney in May. The months leading up to the half marathon I lost a few kilos, became stronger, learned what I needed to eat in order to fuel my body and I was much happier within myself.

After the half marathon I was completely inspired to keep racing!  I loved the atmosphere and the 'runners high' is second to none!

Since May I have done another half marathon in Melbourne and my first City2Surf - beating the times I set for myself in both races.  My attitude towards health has transformed as well. I am not a saint and certainly indulge at times, but I know my limits and I have learnt to listen to my body. For me that is a great achievement!
I want to stay fit and healthy. I have small goals along the way such as "Only drinking water for one week" where I will eliminate caffiene and alcohol, this keeps me challenged.
I have signed up for 2 more half marathons for 2015 and I want to do a marathon in 2016, who knows maybe more!

Before 2015 I wasn't accustomed to goal setting. I had a bit of a lightbulb moment at the end of last year where I realised that I was just coasting along with no clear vision of what I wanted to do.

Putting pen to paper with my Trainer really helped and I have realised that when I set goals I am incredibly determined to achieve them. I love the challenge, the struggle and being pushed to my limit because in the end it is all worth it. The runners high, the fact that none of my clothes fit me anymore and the mindfulness that exercise gives me, motivates me to keep on pushing!

Every week my Trainer asks me what my goals are for the week. Sometimes, I struggle to answer this question because I think that my little goals aren't worth talking about. But really every goal is a little achievement and this weekly question is really helpful for me and gets me thinking about what is important to me.

If  someone was looking to set some big goals for themselves like taking on a running event, my advice would be, give yourself enough time to prepare. Do some research on different training plans and have one created specifically for you to suit your goals.  Get some new running shoes. Sign up to an event in a dream destination (for me this is Queenstown, NZ). Run everywhere and often, even when you don't want to. It will always make you feel amazing afterwards. Drink coffee, drink water, don't say you can't do it because you are 'not a runner' - who cares, we were born to use our legs, go run!
