For most of my life I have set goals for myself to achieve, some have been short term, and others for the long term.

From my personal experience and from watching the success of others I have found that you will be as happy as you will make your mind up to be.

Take weight loss for example, alot of clients I have met or worked with love themselves conditionally. I will be happy when I lose these 10 kilos. I will love my body when I can run without pain.

Or financially: if I earned more I'd be happier, I'd try harder if I was paid enough.

Have you ever had the same or similar thoughts?

The problem with these thoughts are that once you achieve the result you are after your mindset has not changed.

For every person that has said they would be happy with losing 10 kilos I can show you one who has and either put it back on, or is not as happy as they thought they'd be once they got there. Similarly in business. I have seen people focus on owning a business putting off happiness until that day they are a business owner calling the shots; and then the business consumes them.

Whilst the destination is important, so too is enjoying the journey.

I have been guilty of this in the past, setting goals and delaying happiness until they are reached. I found once I reached the goals I'd soon enough find myself wanting more, more muscle, more time, more money, and so forth.

But I have learnt now to focus on the 1% improvements each day, that is what keeps me in a positive state. Small measurable improvements over time, little wins each day. Multiplied over weeks, months, and years they can create staggering results.

The exciting thing about goal setting is becoming the person you need to be to achieve your goals. That is the true reward for achievement - the person you become to reach the destination.

Make a conscious effort to enjoy the now, set the goals and make sure you are enjoying the process of attaining the goal. Delaying happiness into the future is a fools game, trust me.

Enjoy the journey.
