10 Simple make-it-yourself salad dressings that won't burst your calorie bank!

With any type of salad and or veggies it needs to feel substantial or what you will find is after consuming that one meal, you will undo all that good by attacking the cupboards later because you weren't left feeling satisfied or full.

But why do we encourage you to make your own salad dressings when you could simply buy one from the shops? Well we prefer you to make your own and use nourishing ingredients with health-promoting ingredients instead of a store-bought salad dressing that are often high in calories and contain bad fats and full of preservatives and chemicals added to extend their shelf life.

We know that salad and veggies are great for our waistlines and full of fibre but let's face it, they can be very boring simply on their own which is why we are giving you 10 make-it-yourself salad dressings that won't burst your calorie bank! All of which can be stored in a glass container in your fridge for later on as well.

What you dress your salad or veggies with should be as healthy as the salad itself! So here are our simple and quick dressings:

Classic Italian Dressing
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 garlic clove, thinly sliced
½ teaspoon mixed dried herbs

Place all ingredients in a jar and season to taste, seal the jar and shake vigorously until well combined.
Use straight away or store in a cool dark place for up to 2 weeks.

Lemon Vinaigrette
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest
3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 tbsp olive oil
freshly ground white pepper

Place the lemon zest, juice and mustard in a bowl and whisk together until combined, While whisking quickly, slowly pour in the oil until well incorporated and the dressing is thick and creamy, Season with salt and pepper. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Zingy Sweet Chilli Dressing
1 small red chilli, finely chopped, seeds in or out depending on your preference
2 tbsp honey
3 tbsp boiling water
½ teaspoon sesame oil
1 tbsp Tamari Soy Sauce (gluten free soy sauce)
1 tbsp fresh lime juice

Place chilli, honey and boiling water into a heatproof bowl and stir until the honey dissolves. Set aside and allow to come to room temperature. Stir in remaining ingredients and use straight away or store in an air-tight container for up to 1 week.

Caesar Salad Dressing
1 cup full cream Greek Style Yoghurt
2 tbsp lemon juice
4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon Dijon Mustard
1 clove crushed garlic
sea salt and pepper to taste.

Simply combine in a bowl and enjoy.

Honey Mustard Dressing
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, shake until well combined. Refrigerate and let flavours blend for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Greek Yoghurt Ranch Dressing
3/4 cup whole milk plain Greek yogurt
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1/4 cup fresh minced parsley OR 1 tbsp dried parsley
1/4 medium onion, diced (about 2 tbsp) OR 2 teaspoons onion powder
2 tbsp fresh minced chives
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 2 tbsp)
1/4 cup-1/2 cup buttermilk

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, shake until well combined or blend in a food processor until well combined and smooth. Refrigerate and let flavours blend for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Creamy Avocado Mayonnaise Dressing
1 free range egg
2 tbsp lemon juice
150 ml avocado oil
1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard

Combine egg, lemon juice and mustard into a bowl. Slowly whisk in the avocado oil until it starts to thicken and emulsify. Season with a little salt and drizzle over your salad or veggies.

Sesame-Ginger Japanese inspired dressing
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp sesame oil
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, finely minced
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp peel and grated fresh ginger

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, shake until well combined. Refrigerate and let flavours blend for at least 30 minutes before serving

Aromatic Garden Salad Dressing
Ingredients
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp tamari soy sauce
2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped

Mix all of the ingredients together well and serve over a garden salad of your choice.

Balsamic Vinaigrette
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp honey
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, shake until well combined. Refrigerate and let flavours blend for at least 30 minutes before serving.

A good dressing will turn any salad or veggies into a masterpiece!
Making delicious dressings and condiments at home is faster and easier than you probably think and has the added benefit of no added nasties such as refined sugars, poor quality oils and artificial flavours like MSG which can be found in many store-bought products.

Where possible always try to get in good quality nutrition into your diet with great flavour and next time you have a social event to attend you might just make friends with salad!
