How to Create a Workout Habit and Motivate Yourself*

Wednesday, 25 May 2016, By Keenan Mowat

Everyone has their ups and downs with following a consistent training regime. I have to admit that I am not exempt from this and also sometimes struggle to create a consistent workout habit. Creating a consistent workout habit though is crucial to achieving many health and fitness goals. The main barriers I see for those who struggle to create a workout habit are:

  • Not enough motivation
  • Lack of time
  • Not sure what to do

Overcoming these barriers is essential to help create a quality and consistent workout habit and there are several ways of going about this.

Set a SMART goal (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely)

Setting a great goal will not only help to motivate you but will help give you clear direction in your workouts with an end point or target to reach. The quality of this goal though is important and it should be something that you truly wish to achieve. You must have a compelling reason WHY you wish to achieve the goal or it is not likely that you will be motivated enough to actually do the work required to get there.

Find a friend/workout buddy who has similar goals to you

Doing workouts with a friend can be more motivating and enjoyable than on your own. In addition to this, if you have planned to do a workout with a friend, you are less likely to avoid going compared to if you were going all alone with no one keeping you accountable.

Get a Personal Trainer

Similar to a friend/workout buddy, a personal trainer will keep you accountable to your goals and scheduled workouts.  A trainer will also be able to create a thorough and effective training plan that targets your goals specifically and eliminates the issue of not knowing what to do to get the most out of your workouts. In addition to this, research proves that those with a personal trainer have over 80% adherence on average to their training program compared to less than 60% on average for those working out in a gym or health club on their own. This difference when it comes to results has proven to be massive. Having a trainer will also allow you to maximise workouts while minimising time, meaning that you become more efficient in your workouts thus saving time for those people who are time poor.
