What is Toning and What Does it Mean?*

Tuesday, 24 May 2016, By Keenan Mowat

Do you currently feel like your body is soft, saggy and lacks tone? Are you one of the many people out there who would love to have a nicely toned body? If this sounds like you, are you able to answer the following questions? What exactly is toning, and what does it mean?

Surprisingly, most people don't fully understand what toning actually means, which then makes it even more difficult to achieve. Toning is one of the MANY buzzwords used in the health and fitness industry which was created by marketing experts as a means to attract females into gyms who were afraid of becoming 'bulky' from lifting weights. Firstly, we must address this common misconception and do some myth busting. Lifting weights WILL NOT make you bulky like a body builder. There are many other factors at play and specific types of training and nutrition required to achieve these rare and extreme physiques. In the fitness world, there is no single universally accepted definition for toning. Generally however, when people say they wish to become more "toned", what they really want, is to be leaner and therefore have more visible muscle definition, and a firmer feel.

Does this match your definition of toning? If not, it may not be toning that you are in fact trying to achieve. If it does sound at least similar, you appear to be on the right track. Your next question might then be, "what is the best way to become leaner, have more definition and feel firmer?" The answer to this begins with the same reason the marketing experts came up with this buzzword in the first place. To increase your metabolism and burn fat, one of the most effective methods is by lifting weights or engaging in strength training. This works by increasing the size of the muscle (only slightly) which in turn increases the resting metabolic rate of the body. This put simply, means that you burn more energy when sitting on your bum, than you would if you were not engaging in regular strength training. The other important factor here with regards to having more muscle definition is having big enough muscles in the first place to define.

When it comes to losing body fat and becoming leaner, science tells us that at least 70% of your success will come from your nutrition and only 30% from the exercise that you do. With this said, the most important thing you can do in the quest to becoming more toned, is to improve your dietary habits. One of the simplest and most effective ways this can be done is by keeping a food diary which will help you to become more aware of your food choices and portion sizes. An even better option again if you wish to achieve a healthy toned body, is to seek the guidance of a qualified and experienced personal trainer and nutritionist such is available at Vision Personal Training Templestowe.
