Can you go a month without alcohol?*

Can you go for an entire month without alcohol?

Would you eat a loaf of bread or a bag of potatoes on a night out with friends?  The answer to this question may surprise you!!  When you take a close look at what is in alcohol you'll be amazed at how much food you would have to eat as an equivalent food source.  Let's have a look at some examples:

One standard 30ml spirit contains the equivalent energy value to that of a large apple, a potato or two slices of bread. Add the soft drink 'mixer' to this and it is the equivalent of two large apples, two potatoes or 4 slices of bread.

Now ask yourself the question, can you imagine that in place of your Friday work drinks, you sit there eating through a loaf of bread, a bag of potatoes or a bag of apples?  Can't imagine it?  Well if you had 3 or 4 standard drinks (spirits with mixer) throughout the night, then you've done just that.

Be kind to your bodies and give alcohol a break, even if it's just for a month.  Not only will your body feel cleansed and more energized, it will help you accelerate your training efforts.  No late, alcohol-fuelled nights mean more get up and go the next morning.

Reducing your alcohol intake is also a good option.  Alcohol is very energy dense, containing almost twice as much energy as carbohydrates for each gram consumed. So, whenever you drink alcohol, your body's fat burning mechanism is TURNED OFF!!!  Tt takes a long time before it is turned back on again.  If you are keen to reduce the amount you drink rather than have a complete break then make some better choices by:

  • Choosing low alcohol content beers and diet mixers
  • Avoid consuming high carbohydrate and fatty foods prior to and while drinking
  • Be aware that the foods you consume on those days, your hunger is often dehydration, confused by the feeling of hunger.

A low to moderate exercise session (no high intensity) the following day will also help to move toxins from alcohol through your body.  We also recommend that you drink at least 2 litres of water each and every day.
