When it comes to changing something in our lives, the truth is that something needs to change in what we do daily, weekly, and monthly for that to happen.
What we need to understand, get comfortable and make piece with is part of that change is saying "no" to some things we are currently doing/allowing in order to say to "yes" to ourselves and our wants, goals and even dreams if that is what you would like to call them. We need to become objective, black and white, we need to take a hard look at ourselves and take ownership of the behaviours and actions that stopping us from "levelling up". Is it hard? Yes. Is it uncomfortable? Yes. Will it be ok with everyone in our lives that we are doing this? Absolutely not! BUT the good news is that this is not about them, it is 100% entirely about YOU. It is about what is important to you, what you are not/no longer happy with.
Once you are clear on what the actions are that are consistently hindering you from progressing in any area of your life, (we are going to use health and fitness as an example), it is time to decide what needs to change and what actions will become the priority. And by decide I mean take a hard stance, I mean make a promise to yourself that you are not going to be the barrier in your own life, draw a line in the sand and raise your standards. This is called taking control of your life, not allowing others to decide what happens to you. Yes, it sounds dramatic but that is the truth of what it takes to create change. Something must change.
Now that the dramatic piece is over let's dive into the practical application, the juice of it if you will.
What are your new non-negotiables? What are the things that will get done each week, no questions asked and no excuses or reasoning? Let's create some perspective. Say you are a journalist and your editor has told you have 3 days to have your article/story on their desk or your out on the street looking for another job? You are going to write the best article you have ever written and its going to be on their desk in 2 and a half days! Because its non-negotiable, there is consequences! They are just immediate whereas health and fitness consequences can take months and years to manifest… unless you take action!
When it comes to health and fitness here are some non-negotiables, I have found work not only for myself but for most people too:
- Food prep- Making sure that is something always ready to eat so you aren't grabbing a big mac for lunch, it can be as simple as cooking extra at dinner so you have lunch ready the next day or you can cook up a bunch of food a few times a week so that its always ready to go.
- Set a regimen with your exercise- Same thing, same day, same time. Not only does that create a routine for you, the people closest to you get used to it and know that its not even worth bothering you at that time or asking what your up to.
No there is not some massive elaborate list of things you need to do, nor do you need to become a "guru". What does need to happen though is your level of self-discipline of MUST increase. Is it easy at first? Nope. Is it worth it? YES, if you are clear on what you want (refer to 1st paragraph). Wishy washy goals are not going to cut it, for your non negotiables to stick your goals need to get you fired up, they need to excite you and even scare you a little bit. If you are ready to make change because right now taking that step is LESS painful than staying where you are then that is a good thing, truly.
Its time to take those positive steps. It is time to put yourself. It is to decide your non-negotiables to be your best!*Disclaimer: Individual results vary based on agreed goals. Click here for details.
